Will Sernova's Clinical Trial Cure Type 1 Diabetes?

Curing type 1 diabetes isn't as simple as we'd like it to be! Sernova Corporation is working on a functional cure with a cell pouch containing insulin-producing cells from organ donors.

Eventually, this pouch will contain manufactured insulin-producing cells from Evotech — starting potentially in 2025. The pouch protects the cells from the immune system of a person with type 1 diabetes. So far, 5 out of the 6 participants in the first phase of the trial are insulin independent — this means they are no longer taking daily injections of insulin to achieve normal blood sugar levels!
