The Bruckner Expressway is an important link that connects the RFK (Triboro), Whitestone, and Throgs Neck Bridges, as well as connecting to the New England and New York State Thruways. Known as the Triborough Bridge until 2008, the RFK Bridge (Interstate 278) opened on July 11, 1936 as one of the largest public works projects undertaken during the Great Depression. All together, the bridge is actually a series of three bridges that connect the boroughs of Queens, Manhattan, and Bronx, as well as the 14 miles of approach roads and viaducts that connect each of the three bridges together. The spans cross the East River. The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (more commonly referred to as the "BQE") is one of the most important arteries through NYC, connecting those two boroughs with points west and north of Long Island. The expressway, along with its cousin the Cross Bronx Expwy was one of the more controversial highway projects in NYC when it was completed in 1964. The Gowanus Expressway connects the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the Belt Parkway with downtown Manhattan, via the Brooklyn Bridge and Hugh Carey Tunnel. The Verrazano Narrows Bridge (Interstate 278) is the largest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere with a main suspension span of 4,260 ft. It spans the mouth of the Hudson River and is viewed by many as the Gateway to New York Harbor. The bridge's two towers stand 680 ft. high. Altogether, its two decks carry 12 lanes of traffic. The Staten Island Expressway is said borough's major east-west highway, connecting the Verrazano and Goethals Bridges. The Goethals Bridge is a dual-span cable-stayed bridge carrying I-278 across the Arthur Kill between Elizabeth, NJ and Staten Island, NY. This signature span opened to traffic in 2018 and replaced an old bridge of the same name built in 1928.
