Boy with Autism Learns to Speak at The HeartShare School

HeartShare truly believes in the
HeartShare truly believes in the limitless potential of children and adults with special needs. Tallal attends The HeartShare School for children 5-21 with autism in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. When Tallal started at the school five years ago, he had non-verbal autism, which means that he could not communicate by speaking to others. At The HeartShare School, Tallal learns in a rigorous Common Core classroom, as well as receives speech, occupational and physical therapies. He also resides at HeartShare's Children's Residence, which is adjacent to the school.
At age 12, Tallal said his first words alongside Darnell, HeartShare one-to-one frontline employee who works directly with Tallal over 16 hours daily. Two weeks later, Tallal, who returned home for the weekend, was able to say on Mother's Day, "I love you, Mommy." This is the first time she ever heard her son speak. Today, the HeartShare team continues to work with Tallal to build his vocabulary.
With 24/7 exposure to skilled, compassionate staff between our school and residence, Tallal was able to make this extraordinary breakthrough to become more independent.
