As a pro pool player considered as the greatest one among all, Efren “Bata” Reyes has won and lost against other pro pool players in pool matches. Among those matches, of course the most interesting to watch were his matches against other great players that he considers to be his hardest opponents. Based on an interview, the one of hardest opponents that Reyes has ever faced is Earl “the Pearl” Strickland. Strickland himself is also a pool legend from the United States, he has many achievements that are on par with or even more than Reyes’. So, the matches between Reyes and Strickland are always expected by pool fans. With that in mind, here are 5 best matches of Reyes versus Strickland.

Number 5.
1990 Pool Death Match 9-7. As pro pool players who have been active for almost 4 decades, Efren “Bata” Reyes and Earl “the Pearl” Strickland have faced against each other in numerous matches. One of the earliest matches was in the 1990 Pool Death Match. Both players gave great performances and took turns in leading the match but Reyes had a head-start by winning 4 straight racks in the beginning of the match. Then, Strickland led the match after he won 6 racks, in which 2 of them were won by 9 ball breaks. However, Reyes eventually won the match with 9 against 7 racks won after having great efforts in the match.

1995 Sands Regency Open XXI. If you ask about one of the most thrilling matches between Efren “Bata” Reyes and Earl “the Pearl” Strickland, then their match in the 1995 Sands Regency Open XXI Championship was one of them. It’s because in the match, both Reyes and Strickland gave it their all. Although it was Reyes who eventually won the match, it was still a very thrilling match because it was the only match in this list that was won by Reyes with a deciding rack. He won the match with 13 against 12 racks won, meaning that he won by a hair in the match and if only Reyes made another mistake there, the winner would surely be Strickland. Also, the sportsmanship shown by Strickland by congratulating Reyes after he pocketed the last ball by shaking hands and raising Reyes’ hand up was very enjoyable to watch.

1996 Color of Money. If you ask about the most memorable match between Efren “Bata” Reyes and Earl “the Pearl” Strickland, then the 1996 Color of Money will surely be the answer. It’s true that Reyes and Strickland have had numerous matches against each other, including the 2001 Color of Money II, but the unique event format and the large amount of prize money of the 1996 Color of Money as well as the nature of event that was made as a memorial to the movie of the same name made it the most memorable event for Reyes and his fans. The event itself was only a single match, meaning that it was only participated by Reyes and Strickland. However, the race to 120 format of the match made it very interesting. Also, the winner-takes-all format of the prize money which made it reach 100,000 US Dollars made it even more interesting. With such match format, the game lasted for 3 days. Reyes had been 17 racks left behind in the match but he caught up with Strickland and eventually won the match with 120 against 117 racks won. By winning the match, Reyes was given a 100,000 US Dollar reward while Strickland was given no reward for losing. Unfortunately, the prize money was reduced in the 2001 Color of Money II to 15,000 US Dollars for the winner and 5,000 US Dollars for the loser. So, Reyes received 15,000 US Dollars for winning the second event while Strickland received 5,000 US Dollars for losing there

1997 US Open 9-Ball Championship. After you hear about the 3 wins Efren “Bata” Reyes had against Earl “the Pearl” Strickland that have been mentioned in this video, you may have started to think that Reyes has always won in matches against Strickland. Well, if you think like that, then you are absolutely wrong. It’s because Efren has been defeated by Strickland in several matches. Those matches included their match in the grand final round of the 1997 US Open 9-Ball Championship. Ironically, that time Reyes was easily beaten by Strickland in the match with 2 against 11 racks won. With that big victory, Strickland was given his fourth US Open 9-Ball champion title as well as prize money worth 25,000 US Dollars.
