Even though it is potentially one of the freakiest looking spiders in the world, and also grows to daunting sizes, the pantropical huntsman spider (Heteropoda venatoria) is a gentle giant.

These extra large arachnids have an unconventional hunting strategy compared to the web spinning spiders - rather than using sticky silk to entrap prey items, huntsmans chase them down, pin them with their powerful legs, and inject paralyzing neurotoxic venom.

Okay so admittedly their hunting strategy is a little terrifying, but thankfully not only are these arachnids docile when handled, their venom is also not medically significant to humans!

Despite how they are often portrayed in popular media, huntsmans are just as hesitant to interact with (let alone bite) a human as other spiders. Which is to say, they are going to try and avoid humans at all costs.

Also, as some of the largest spiders on the island chains (such as Japan and Hawaii) where they occur, huntsmans are ecologically important mid-tier consumers which help maintain a balanced trophic pyramid.
