In Pakistan, Punjab's government says smog is so bad in 10 of the province's districts that wearing a mask is now mandatory in those areas whenever stepping outside. Health Secretary Ali Jan Khan wrote in a public order: “smog poses a serious and imminent threat to public health in all age groups.”
Pakistan's Punjab and Sindh provinces share a border with Indian states. One of the main reasons for smog in Punjab is crop burning by Indian farmers in the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. As per a rough estimate, farmers in these states burn as much as 35 million tonnes of straw stubble every year.
