Join me on an enchanting journey to Markooh Castle in the county of Katalehm, Ramsar, in the Mazandaran province. To reach this historical gem, you'll need to ascend about 700 to 800 steps through lush forests. Once you arrive, the castle's stunning vistas will greet you. From one side, you'll see citrus groves in full bloom during spring, filling the air with the intoxicating scent of orange blossoms. From the other side, the expansive Caspian Sea stretches out before you.
Markooh Castle, dating back to post-Islamic periods, is situated along the Talar Road in Ramsar. It was officially registered as a national heritage site in Iran on March 15, 2001, under registration number 3484. Although the exact date of its construction remains unclear, historians suggest it was built in the 9th century, based on similar architectural features of that era. The castle is referenced in historical texts like Zeydat al-Tawarikh and the comprehensive chronicles by Rashid al-Din Fazlullah.
The castle's ruins include four perimeter walls and supporting towers, covering an area of about 600 square meters. Built primarily from stone, mortar, and gypsum, the interior could accommodate 100 soldiers comfortably. Its strategic location offers a 360-degree view, encompassing the Caspian Sea to the north, Tonekabon to the east, Ramsar to the west, and the Alborz mountains to the south.
Local lore speaks of a tunnel connecting the castle to the village of Niasta below, though this has been debunked, revealing instead an ancient cold-water storage system. Markooh Castle's picturesque setting and historical significance make it a serene and captivating destination, perfect for those seeking peace and a touch of history.
