Knock Knees (Genu Valgum) - Causes, Symptoms, and Management

Knock knees or genu valgum, is a condition in which the knees are out of alignment with the feet and ankles. It’s easily observed if you notice when the knees are together, but the feet and ankles are apart.

Knock knees are normal for a child during a certain phase in their growth and development. The majority of cases are a normal variant of growth, and the condition usually resolves on its own by the time a child is 7 or 8 years old. However, if the knock knees are too significant or affect walking and running gait, parents should consult a podiatrist for advice.

There are a number of solutions for knock knees, depending on the severity of the condition. Some common management options include:

- Exercises: There are a number of exercises that can help to strengthen the muscles around the knees and improve alignment.

- Bracing: A brace can be used to help keep the knees in alignment.

- Surgery: In rare cases, surgery may be necessary to correct knock knees.

Here are some of the signs and symptoms of knock knees that may warrant intervention:

- The angle between the knees persists after or worsens after the child is 6 years old

- The legs look asymmetrical.

- The knees are painful

- The child is obese

- The child has flat feet, which can worsen with knocked knees

- The child has lax or hypermobile joints.

If you are concerned or suspect your child has knocked knees, it is important to see a physician or a podiatrist for a diagnosis.
