Indonesian shipbuilder PT PAL is currently negotiating the sale of two additional Strategic Sealift Vessels (SSVs) for the Philippine Navy (PN) — a contract initially valued at USD92 million, Jane’s 360 reports on Monday.

Speaking at the Asian Defence and Security (ADAS) 2018 exhibition in Manila last week, PT PAL’s official said a contract to supply the two SSVs could emerge in 2019 to meet the PN’s requirements to respond to disaster relief and counter-insurgency (COIN) operations.

In May 2017, two SSVs (also from state-owned PT PAL) were officially commissioned into the service for the PN namely Davao Del Sur-602 and BRP Tarlac ( 601 ).

The Jakarta Post confirmed last year that PT PAL received orders from Philippines for another two SSV and two 60-meter long missile-armed ships (KCR-60) as announced by its President director Budiman Saleh.

“People see that the Philippines have used the SSV-123 meter long ships. The ships are a magnet for other countries,” Budiman added.

Measuring 123 meters long and with a maximum carrying capacity of 11,583 tons, the SSVs can transport heavy equipment, supplies, and troops to anywhere in the archipelago.

It has provisions for 121 crew members and can house up to 500 soldiers. It can also carry up to 3 naval helicopters on its heli-deck and two “baby boats” in its rear hold.
