JEWEL HEIST HITS VERSACE
Top designer store Versace admitted today that jewellery and cash has been stolen from a safe at one of its exclusive branches in Britain.
Newspaper reports had said the theft from the firm's Old Bond Street store in central London were worth up to £1.5 million ($2 million) and were taken while the store was closed overnight.
The UK press claim that police now believe the robbery was an inside job and are now hunting for a £250 ($350)-a-week security guard who is believed to be on the run abroad,
A spokeswoman for Versace in London said today: "Initially, Versace were very anxious to keep this matter quiet to allow officers to pursue their inquiries."
A spokeswoman from Scotland Yard today confirmed that officers were investigating a theft at the store, but refused to confirm that police wanted to question a security guard, or the value of the goods involved.
"Police are investigating a theft from Versace on the evening of May 5," she said. "A quantity of jewellery and cash was taken from the safe."
No arrests have been made and inquiries are continuing into the theft, which police were alerted to on Monday, May 7, she said.
Among the jewellery taken was a ring worth £250,000 and a diamond-encrusted watch valued at £70,000, the UK's leading tabloid, The Sun, reported today. However, an envelope containing £180 ($250) belonging to a fellow member of staff, was left behind.
The guard was said to have been on duty alone at the shop, one of Versace's flagship stores, while it was closed on the night of Saturday, May 5.
Embarrassed executives of the fashion empire, controlled by Donatella Versace, sister of its founder, Gianni, wanted to keep the theft a secret but press leaks made a cover-up impossible.
Stars who are fans of Versace include Elizabeth Hurley, Jennifer Lopez, and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell. Supermodel Kate Moss, Victoria 'Posh Spice' Beckham and Sir Elton John are all regular shoppers at the central London store.
