It is estimated that there are more than 400 indigenous tribes such as the Yanomamo and Kayapo in the Amazon rainforest. Most of the indigenous Amazon people today live in protected areas of the forest known as indigenous lands. Their homes are communal structures made of wood, bamboo, and thatch.
Each family has its own bonfire within these structures, and hammocks are hung around them. In the center is an area set aside for feasts and performances, usually isolated tribes make decisions collectively, great debates are held and everyone is allowed to express their opinions.
Farming and fishing are still basic skills that are taught to children from an early age. Crocodiles, monkeys, deer, fish and turtles are the main sources of livelihood for them. They are hunted with guns, poison-tipped arrows, spears and traps
The groups live either in riverside areas that flow in the rainy season or on dry land in the forest practicing the 'slash-and-burn' method of farming, moving their cultivation from place to place as the soil nutrients are depleted.
Men and women have different roles in local communities - men have traditional roles in hunting and gathering, while women run the house, grow crops, take care of children and cook.
Clothing differs from tribe to tribe - reclusive tribes are often naked, while others wear apron or straw skirts and tribal face paint is worn to scare enemies, camouflage, or sometimes for religious reasons.
Spirituality is a large part of their lives, and many reclusive tribes believe that animal spirits inhabit all things, some spirits can be malicious, and they inhale hallucinogens in certain plants to get closer to the spirit world.
There are still a few tribes living mostly in Brazil and Peru. South American governments instituted "no contact" policies to ensure that these tribes were left alone.
But the threat of exposing these isolated tribes to infections such as measles or influenza is a constant concern. Peru and Brazil have established networks of reserves to protect the tribes from exploitation and modern disease.
Brazil includes as many as 70 unknown tribes within the Amazon region and with increasing deforestation and land exploitation, some isolated tribes have taken steps to initiate "first contact".
