The science of Histology is extremely diverse in methods and procedures, particularly in reference to the type of specimen (human tissue, veterinary, or plant), that one is studying.  Bone specimens, human or veterinary, require a special knowledge and understanding of the differences between soft tissue and bone, if one is to be able to process, section, and stain the tissue.

This session will give participants an understanding of the anatomy of bone, and the diversity even within bone itself separating it into two classes; compact or cancellous.  Discussion will include the nature of the dense cement matrix of compact bone, and the delicate differentiation of trabecular bone, and how to adjust/modify methods and procedures depending on which is being decalcified.  A primary focus will be on bone marrow specimens, how they are obtained, methods of monitoring the decalcification process, and review and assessment of your results based on the retention of basophilic staining in cells.  Participant will leave with a much stronger and thorough knowledge of the science and application of decalcification.
