In 1981 a paper titled 'Owners and Satellites: The Economics of Territory Defence in the Pied Wagtail, Motacilla alba' noted the defence of feeding territories of wagtails along a river. These birds can plan foraging patterns, and will sometimes tolerate a feeding partner to help defend good quality habitat.
