Thick black smoke rises above the sky in Nepal, after a plane crashed just after take off from the capital. Authorities have recovered 18 bodies in the wreckage. The plane’s pilot was the lone survivor. All aboard were Nepali citizens, apart from one Yemeni national. The plane took off at 11:11am local time, and was heading to the resort town of Pokhara. It crashed shortly after take off, in the eastern section of the airport. Visibility was low around Kathmandu airport, which is notoriously difficult for take off and landing due to the surrounding mountains, however it is not clear exactly what caused the crash. The Himalayan nation is notorious for poor air safety, partially due to the many small airports nestled between cloud-reaching peaks. 350 people have died in plane or helicopter incidents in Nepal since 2000. The airport is now closed, while emergency crews and investigators asses the crash area.
