In her talk, Evi chronicles her journey from an apolitical family to her journalism career and realizing the dark side of capitalism in media, culminating in 2021 when she co-founded Project Multatuli, an award-winning media outlet challenging male-centric and Jakarta-centric norms in the Indonesian media landscape. Project Multatuli addresses information inequality by spotlighting Indigenous communities, victims of abuse, farmers in conflict, religious and sexual minorities, workers, and the urban poor, showcasing the need for public service journalism dedicated to diverse and impactful storytelling that disrupts prevailing capitalist media practices. Evi Mariani is the co-founder and executive director of Project Multatuli, a seasoned journalist with a 20-year career focused on telling impactful stories about marginalized communities in Indonesia. Formerly the managing editor at The Jakarta Post, she garnered many prestigious awards for her work, including the IPMA Golden Award for Investigative Journalism, Tasrif Award, and SOPA Awards for Excellence in Public Service Journalism.
