Salta is a provincial capital in the mountainous northwest of Argentina. It was founded in 1582 and is known for its Spanish colonial architecture and Andean heritage. The city is centered around the elegant, cafe-lined Plaza 9 de Julio, around which are the Salta Cathedral and El Cabildo, an 18th-century town hall turned museum. Nearby is the Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña, which houses Inca artifacts and mummies.
