50mm IS NOT "NORMAL"!! I can prove it.

For about 100 years, the photography community has agreed that 50mm on a full-frame camera is "normal". Everything wider than 50mm is "wide-angle", and everything longer is "telephoto." All our kit lenses are centered around 50mm, and the "normal" focal length is the default for many photographers.

But what exactly is this idea of a "normal" lens based on? Some people think that 50mm (about 45 degrees) matches the angle of human vision, but that's complete nonsense, because humans have about 180-210 degrees of vision. Other people say it's based on the focal length of the lens matching the diagonal measurement of the film plane or sensor, but that would be 43mm rather than 50mm. Also, why would we base creative choices like compression and perspective on the mathematical alignment of two internal camera measurements?

It's time we forget the idea of a "normal" lens. The makers of the most popular cameras in the world - smartphones - already have. Even though many new smartphones have 50mm equivalent lenses, NONE of them use it by default - they all default to 24-28mm... because, the fact is, that's the new normal. That's closer to human vision.

Tony Northrup proposes a new system for discussing focal lengths that isn't based on the 100 year old Leica I camera. Tony suggests that we think of the intimacy or formality of a focal length in relation to subject distance in regular human interactions:

* 24mm is "intimate", because this is the distance you stand while talking or dining with close friends and family. It's also the focal length we use for personal discussions with video tools like Facetime.
* 35mm is "comfortable". This is the distance we stand when talking with acquaintences and coworkers.
* 50mm is "formal" because this distance is similar to the distance you stand from a teacher or other presenter.
* 85mm is "distant". It's rather far away, but that's still the ideal focal length for serious, professional portraits. It's what we use for our news pieces.

In the comments, tell me what you consider to be the "normal" focal length and also tell me your age.
