It is the first day
It is the first day off during our voluntary work for the German War Graves Commission in Lithuania. Our work doesn't just mean toil in the military cemetery. We also use the free time at the weekend to recover from the rather strenuous physical work and to explore the country we are visiting. Because international understanding and the reconciliation of people in Europe and the world are also important to us. That's why we visit places that have a historical connection to the times when war raged here and those German soldiers lost their lives, whose graves and commemoration we now preserve.
Today we visit the region along the Neman river and drive first to the old East Prussian railway station of Priekule (German Prökuls). From therewe head to the ornithological station of Vente in the Windenburger Eck. After a delicious local lunch in the village of Minija, a boat trip on the river of the same name follows. Due to bad weather we soon have to turn around and continue to Šilutė (German Heydekrug). The place was largely spared during the war and had been able to preserve its appearance of the past decades and centuries.
From there we continue to Rusne (German: Ruß), where Lithuania ends and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad (German: Königsberg) begins.
Everywhere we see how Lithuanian history and culture has grown in parallel with that of German culture and how closely they are connected.
