Foreign ministers from Arab League member states have agreed to reinstate Syria’s membership after 12 years of suspension. The ministers voted for Syria’s return into the fold at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo on May 7. The move comes amid a flurry of regional normalisation of ties with Damascus in recent weeks. However, the bloc said the reinstatement of Syria does not mean normalisation of relations between Arab countries and Damascus. Syria’s Arab League membership was revoked after President Bashar al-Assad ordered a crackdown on protesters in March 2011. The US has said that it will not normalise relations with the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The US has maintained that it would not change its opposition to al-Assad without an inclusive political settlement to the conflict.
