Digging's tone is serious and full of reflection. Seamus Heaney is an Irish writer who won Novel prize in literature in 1995. Digging is his debut poem Published in his collection of Naturalist in 1966. The poem opens with the speaker sitting at his desk, his pen set to begin writing. Further, He is distracted by the sound of his father working in the garden, which takes the speaker into a spiral of memories about his father working in the potato fields when he was a small child. The memories continue even further back to his grandfather and the hard effort he conducted as a peat harvester. The speaker eventually pulls out of his daydream and returns to his desk, ready to get back to work on his writing.
