The two eyes that you see on a fly's head are actually compound eyes that are made up of around 4 thousand lenses each! This allows them to see a 360 degree picture of their surroundings with very little blind spots. This is why flies are so hard to catch or hit with a fly swatter!

The one problem flies face with their compound eyes is the lack of a pupil, like humans. A pupil restricts the amount of light coming in and allows your eyes to focus. Flies are incapable of doing this.

Scientists are looking into how these thousands of eye lenses work and how humans might be able to take advantage of this technology for our own uses.

Another fun fact is that the most annoying flies tend to be male... who knew?
