In 1971, NBC-TV and Universal Studios introduced the "NBC Mystery Movie," a Wednesday-night umbrella series comprising three crime dramas: "Columbo," "McCloud," and "McMillan & Wife." It was so popular that one year later, the network moved all of those programs to Sunday nights, added Richard Boone's "Hec Ramsey" to the mix, and retitled the rotation the "NBC Sunday Mystery Movie." (   • "NBC Sunday Mystery Movie" TV Intro  ) The show's original Wednesday timeslot was then given over to the new "NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie," featuring "Banacek," "Madigan," and "Cool Million." For the first year, that second "wheel" series used an opening theme composed by Quincy Jones. (Listen to it here: soundcloud.com/jpwrites/original-nbc-wednesday-mys…. But when "Banacek" returned for a second season, to be joined by three new mystery series substitutes--"Faraday and Company," "Tenafly," and "The Snoop Sisters"--the opening title sequence to the "NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie" employed the classic Henry Mancini theme from the original "Mystery Movie." Above is that second version of the "NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie" opening. (Hat tip to Chuck Collins,    • The NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie Opening  )
