Mercedes-AMG introduces the SL 43, a technologically advanced newcomer to the AMG SL roadster series, anticipated to hit U.S. dealerships in the summer of 2023, with prices starting at $109,900. The open-top 2+2-seater houses an enhanced 2.0-liter turbocharged M139 engine, equipped with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger. This innovative technology is directly borrowed from the advanced developments of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. This novel turbocharging system ensures immediate throttle response across the entire rpm range, thereby enhancing the driving dynamics. The turbocharger is powered by the 48-volt electrical system, which also runs the belt-driven starter-generator (RSG), enabling the SL 43 to achieve an output of 375 hp and a peak torque of 354 lb-ft.
The 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL 43 roadster impresses with its extensive standard features. Furthermore, a variety of options are available to customers for personalization.
Over the 70 years of its evolution, the SL has transformed from a pure racing car to a luxury sports car with an open top, earning itself an iconic status. The new Mercedes-AMG SL signifies another notable chapter in the model's history, embodying the unique blend of sportiness from the original SL with the unparalleled luxury and technical sophistication of contemporary Mercedes-AMG models. The SL 43 manifests this evolution with its groundbreaking electric exhaust gas turbocharger. This Formula 1-inspired technology resolves the trade-off between a responsive but lower output small turbocharger and a high power but less responsive large turbocharger. Featuring a relatively lightweight AMG-enhanced 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive, the SL 43 showcases remarkable handling.
Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH, remarks, "The electric exhaust gas turbocharger represents an intriguing example of the extensive technology transfer from Formula 1 to production vehicles. By integrating this technology with our potent M139 four-cylinder, we have also capitalized on the vast experience of our colleagues at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.
