Mylapore is known to be the cultural hub of Chennai. It houses many famous temples, churches and also the Ramakrishna Math. It was called ‘Thirumayilai’ earlier and is claimed to be the birthplace of celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher, Valluvar. The present name of the locality translates to a ‘Land of the peacock scream,’ i.e., ‘Mayil arparikkum oor’ or Mylapore.

Mylapore, part of the central business district of Chennai, is one of the oldest residential localities in the city. It’s famous for housing the Kapaleeshwar Temple, San Thome Cathedral Basilica Church and the Ramakrishna Math. Many Carnatic musical festivals are organized in the locality. Some of them are by reputed organizations like the Narada Gana Sabha Trust, Mylapore Fine Arts Club and Sri Krishna Gana Sabha Trust.

Mylapore is surrounded by prominent areas like Teynampet, Royapettah, Raja Annamalai Puram, Triplicane, Alwarpet and T. Nagar.

Being a part of central Chennai, Mylapore houses many government and private offices. Workplaces in George Town, Periamet, Egmore, T. Nagar, Triplicane and Nungambakkam region are within 2 to 8 km.

Taramani, home to many technology parks like the Ascendas IT Park, Ramanujan IT City, Ticel Biopark, Software Technology Parks of India, Tidel Park and Vikram Sarabhai Instronics Estate, is within 9 km. Further, Guindy Industrial Estate, which consists of the Olympia Technology Park, MCM Towers and Trend India Business Center and Perungudi, housing many IT and ITes companies, are around 8 to 10 km away.

Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, P S Senior Secondary School, Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Higher Secondary School, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, The Madras Sanskrit College, and Queen Mary’s College are prominent educational institutions within the locality.

Moving on to the healthcare facilities, St. Isabel’s Hospital, Chennai Meenakshi Multispeciality Hospital, CSI. Kalyani Multispeciality Hospital and Kauvery Hospital are in the vicinity.

Mylapore, being in the central part of the city, is surrounded by many local shops that cater to the residents’ daily shopping requirements. Apart from that, one can also rely on More Supermarket, Nilgiris Supermarket and White Rose London Supermarket, present within the locality. While Chennai Citi Center is an important shopping complex within the locality, Ramee Mall in Teynampet, Challa Mall in T. Nagar, Express Avenue in Royapettah and Spencer Plaza Mall in Anna Salai are within 2 to 4 km.

Some famous tourist attractions nearby include the Marina beach, Puratchi Thalaivi Amma Dr J. Jayalalithaa Memorial, Gandhi Beach, Chennai Lighthouse, San Thome Cathedral Basilica and the Velleeswarar Temple.

Cathedral Road, Royapettah High Road, Dr Radha Krishnan Salai, Dr Natesan Road, Kamarajar Promenade, Avvai Shanmughan Salai, DIET Chennai Road, Mowbrays Road, CP Ramaswamy Iyer Road, TTK Flyover, Kutchery Road and Luz Church Road are some of the prominent stretches of connectivity in Mylapore.

Chennai MTC runs a good fleet of buses connecting Mylapore with various other localities and important business centers across the city. Mylapore Tank bus stop, Luz Corner bus stop, Mylapore Police Station bus stop, Royapettah bus stop, Mandaveli bus stop and VM Street bus stop are the important bus stations within the locality.

Cabs and autos too are readily available. Teynampet houses the nearest metro station, which is around 3 km away. Thirumayilai Railway station and the Mundakanni Amman Koil Railway Stations are situated within the locality. The Chennai International Airport is around 17 km away and can be reached via the Chennai-Trichy Highway.

Mylapore is a well-developed residential locality that has gained a lot of real estate prominence over the years owing to its proximity to important employment centers. Mylapore is considered an alternative to T. Nagar and other surrounding areas, which are expensive compared to Mylapore. The locality is mainly inhabited by locals and people working in nearby job hubs.

Mylapore, situated in Chennai Central, enjoys excellent connectivity to major employment centers and localities across the city via road and rail. It has a presence of well-established social and retail infrastructure. It’s mostly preferred as an alternative to T Nagar and other surrounding localities where the prices of properties are much higher.
