Mylapore is known to be the cultural hub of Chennai. It houses many famous temples, churches and also the Ramakrishna Math. It was called ‘Thirumayilai’ earlier and is claimed to be the birthplace of celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher, Valluvar. The present name of the locality translates to a ‘Land of the peacock scream,’ i.e., ‘Mayil arparikkum oor’ or Mylapore.
Mylapore, part of the central business district of Chennai, is one of the oldest residential localities in the city. It’s famous for housing the Kapaleeshwar Temple, San Thome Cathedral Basilica Church and the Ramakrishna Math. Many Carnatic musical festivals are organized in the locality.
