What caused the Death of the Greatest Scientist Marie Salomea Skłodowska Curie? Curie's discovery of RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS. 4th July is her Death Anniversary.

Marie Salomea Skłodowska Curie won her first Nobel Prize for the discovery of spontaneous radioactivity and in 1911 she was awarded a second Nobel Prize for the discovery of Polonium and Radium.  But she never knew that this discovery would take a toll on her life. Curie spent most of her time with radioactive elements the effects of radiation were not known at the time. She carried radioactive test tubes in pocket and stored radioactive material in her drawer (no evidence though). As not all radiation is dangerous, but Curie was exposed to what we know as Ionizing Radiation. It is known as ionizing because when it hits an atom it rips its electrons apart making it an ion. High energy electromagnetic radiations are ionizing which include Gamma Rays and X-Rays. Curie was also exposed to X-Rays
and this eventually damaged her DNA. While working in her labs, Curie used to be exposed to large amounts of ionizing radiation for a short time period and this made her cells lose the ability to repair themselves by the effects. She became blind and fell severely ill. As a result of long term radiation exposure in 1934, Curie died from Aplastic Anaemia, a rare condition linked to high levels of exposure to her famed discoveries, the radioactive elements polonium and radium. Her body stopped producing new blood cells.

I can remember two great inspiring quotes that Madam Curie used to say-

"Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less."

"I was taught that the way of progress was neither swift nor easy."

Her life is the most Inspiring scientific journey, I also take inspiration from her husband Pierre Curie who supported her in her scientific mission without him the story of Marie Curie is not complete.
