Today we look at making green screen toy miniatures look realistic with visual effects in after effects. To help us detonate this effect to the next level, I’ll be using assets from Action VFX.

They are actually having a huge sale of 50% off so make sure you take advantage of that!

❇️ Green screen video can be challenging but with these simple tricks in after effects we can get clean assets and integrate them in an action scene with effects full of exploding debris and dust.

💻 Making miniatures look more realistic in post starts with how you shoot them and light them.
A good plate will be your starting element you need to capture. This will inform your lighting to match the toy cars with the real environment as well as camera height and placement.
After that bring all your shot elements in after effects and track your scene. Key and rotoscope your car elements and you can now combine your plate with the cars.
Then it’s all about adding detail.
Think of how things would interact or get damaged in real life. Look at reference footage and other movies with similar scenes.
A good way to blend all these elements together is by color correcting them even with simple curves and tint effects.
Another important effect to add is CC Force Motion Blur. This will add motion blur to assets that may not have it.
Overall it’s about spending time to add detail and polish and with enough patience you can get some fun results with toy miniatures.

Here's a quick breakdown of this video's topics:

1 Removing dirt from your lens in After Effects

This is done with the content aware tool and by using simple masks to surround and select the areas of the frame that have any lens dirt.

2 Using AI to remove compression and noise

By using the latest tools in AI we can clean up footage and restore detail in it that would've been impossible to do not too long ago.

3 Removing unwanted elements from your scene in After Effects
How to Remove Things in After Effects
This can be done multiple ways depending on the complexity of the shot. Your first step is to track it. This can be in 2D as in this case or a full 3D camera track for more complex moving shots. Then a layer is created to cover up the unwanted element. This can be done with the content aware fill tool or even as simply as using a solid or image to match the area being covered up. Clone stamping either in Photoshop or directly in After Effects can be useful steps for more challenging areas to cover.

4 Matching the lighting with rotoscoping and color adjustments
GET THE FILM LOOK: Improve Your Cinem... (Older Video but steps apply)
This can be doing a day for night look or even subtle touches to match the lighting of two different setups lacking the consistency of the same time of day. This can become apparent when losing light at sunset for example and one side of the coverage of a dialogue is slightly different than the other side which may have been shot directly after. Even when compensating with exposure there are still some avoidable and unavoidable differences that can be cheated to look more consistent and correct to the eye.
