AWARE/OWARE Workshop at the Johannesburg Art Gallery

On Sept. 10, 2013, the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG), in collaboration with People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) held an AWARE/OWARE workshop inspired by Art Works for Change's "AWARE/OWARE Game for Female Empowerment" (currently in AWFC's "Off the Beaten Path" exhibition at JAG). Participants from HIVSA, Boitumelo Project, and JAG visitors created game bowls while sharing their own experiences and thoughts on female empowerment. The group then played the game of AWARE/OWARE which is not a game for winning or losing, but rather an opportunity to "capture" the six different aspects of empowerment as it relates to health, economics, education, politics, human rights and stewardship.

The workshop was held in conjunction with Art Works for Change's exhibition "Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art" also on view at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.
