We started the new year strong with a webinar on one of our most popular topics—photometry! From brand new beginners to old-timers looking for ways to improve their photometric precision, this session has something for everyone.

During the broadcast, Walt Cooney walked through the process of photometric reduction, discussed important topics such as binning and choice of filters, and shared how you can maximize your photometric accuracy. He was then joined by Ken Menzies, and together they ran an extended Q&A session, providing expert advice on a wide range of questions about photometry.

Walt Cooney is a newly-elected member of the Board, as well as the Co-Leader of the Cataclysmic Variables Section, and an experienced photometrist. As a longtime member of the Center for Backyard Astrophysics, he’s intimately familiar with matters of photometric precision. He helped found the Sonoita Research Observatory, and introduced the Madrona Peak Observatory into AAVSOnet, providing the network with two of its largest telescopes.
