InfluOur keynote address on the future of tabletop, stats-based sports gaming delivered at Plaay Dot Con 23 on Saturday morning, July 29, in Highland Park, Colorado. We can't thank ‪@PLAAYGamesYT‬'s Keith Avallone enough for this wonderful opportunity. Following Glenn Guzzo's captivating Friday night keynote about the history of stats=based sports games was a tall task, indeed. And as I noted in my intro, anyone in attendance could have presented knowledgeably on this topic — including folks like the legendary game designer Mike Fitzgerald (Baseball Highlights 2045, Football Highlights 2052).

Among the topics we addressed are:

• Top-of-mind trends/issues for #tabletopsports gamers for the immediate future
• Our take on the uniquely niche nature of this gaming segment
• Hurdles and opportunities likely to affect this segment's share of the gaming market

Our bottom line: In this age of digital-first sports gaming, we urge creators of stats-based sports games to target key personas like statistics fans, introverts and sports history buffs from around age 25 upward — and leave the majority of young sports fans to their video/streaming games until they mature into more traditional sports games as published by the venerable companies (APBA, Strat-O-Matic, SherCo, etc.).

That said, there are opportunities to attract younger fans through:

• The influence of teachers
• The influence of game clubs like the Video Game Clubs of America ‪@vgcusa‬
• Sports games that straddle the line between traditional approaches (results boards/charts, numbers-heavy player and team cards) and colorful, card-driven Euro-game mechanics — or the narrative-driven games of Plaay
• Regional #sportsgamer gatherings that allow targeted outreach in a learning environment
