Imatrankoski is Finland's largest rapid located in Imatra Vuoksi.
Imatrankoski was born about 6,000 years ago when Saimaa's water masses broke through Salpausselkä. Salpausläkä formed an effective barrier to the flow of water into Laatokka for a long time, but the elevation of the land further west caused the water to discharge to the southeast. The strength of the rapids is told by the numerous hiidenkirnu and other depressions. The waterfall roared like a torrent summer and winter, and its stable water volume all year round guaranteed an impressive sight regardless of the time. However, it did not escape the floods. The biggest flood happened in 1899, when 1,160 m³ of water per second flowed through the rapids, which is more than twice the normal amount.

Imatrankoski is Finland's oldest tourist attraction, a national landscape that has been admired since the 18th century. In 1772, even the Russian empress Catherine II and her entourage came to marvel at the power of the rapids. At the end of the 19th century, it was a major attraction in all of Europe, and people came to watch the rapids from far away. In the 19th century, Russians wrote graffiti on the rocks of Imatrankoski, and in the middle of the same century, Finland's oldest nature park, Kruununpuisto, was established around the rapids.
The number of tourists who came to see the waterfall landscape increased even more thanks to the castle-like Valtionhotelli, which was completed in 1903. The stone hotel was built in place of two wooden hotels that had burned down, and it was able to better meet the needs of demanding tourists.
