Research Minute- anechoic chamber

Associate professor Pavel Zahorik and his researchers work in the quietest spot at the University of Louisville -- a specially built echo-free chamber in Strickler Hall. There the psychological and brain sciences team uses a robotic system to measures acoustics at different directions. That information can later be used to simulate different listening situations and to figure out the ways the brain decodes where sound emanates and from how far away. Potential applications could benefit people with hearing difficulties or people in jobs such as pilots or air-traffic controllers.
Support for the anechoic chamber comes from the DEPSCoR program (Defense Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research). It is a cooperative program designed to boost Department of Defense funding in statees historically underfunded. The program involves funding from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) as well as contributions from the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
