This is a glimpse of
This is a glimpse of an ancient 18th century Varnam written by Shivanandan of the Tanjore Quartette.
The dancer Suhani Dhanki has had the fine privilege of learning this composition from her revered Guru Dr Sanddhya V Pureccha as delivered through the generations in the Thanjavur Bani of Bharatanatyam.
This Varnam narrates the plight of a heroine who is separated from her lover. Her friend-messenger entreats the hero and pleads with him. She tells him, "That woman is a perfect match for you, like none other! She has a lotus-like beautiful face, fish-shaped eyes, pearl-white teeth, sharp features and crimson red cheeks." Bashfully, she also hints that she is fully matured.
