There are now more than one billion malware programs out there.
And as our lives are becoming increasingly digitized, the risks presented by these threats continue to soar. Thankfully, many sophisticated anti malware solutions are available to detect and remove malicious software from your devices. Among them, McAfee and Avast are popular choices. Avast has 435 million monthly users, and McAfee also goes into the high millions.

But which one is the best antivirus software for you?

➡️  Cybersecurity features McAfee vs Avast
Both McAfee and Avast offer malware scans, a file shredder, a firewall, and lots of other features to enhance the security of your device.
However, only McAfee offers a password manager and the Parental Control feature.
On the other hand, Avast provides the Sandbox feature for virtual file testing and a webcam shield.

➡️  Protection McAfee vs Avast

Protection against malware like viruses, worms, and ransomware is the primary reason to use an antivirus solution. So - let's see how McAfee and Avast handle the latest cyber threats...

I placed ten different malicious programs in a folder on my computer and ran full scans using both antiviruses. McAfee successfully removed all ten malicious programs but Avast was only able to remove nine of them.

➡️  Performance McAfee vs Avast

AV-TEST Institute also independently tested both McAfee and Avast in April 2021.
They gave both antivirus solutions perfect scores in the Protection, Performance, and Usability categories. They detected 100% of zero-day malware, managed to avoid false positives, and they are less of a load on your system than the industry average.

I found that McAfee's’ quick scan completes in just one minute and uses very few system resources. However, McAfee's full scan took one hour and was quite heavy on the system performance, continuously using between 35% and 72% CPU.
When I performed a quick scan using Avast, it completed in a minute but used more resources than McAfee, around 17% CPU.

If you look for the AV-comparatives take on the security evaluation of Kaspersky and Bitedefender, you’d be a little disappointed. They are too close. Bitdefender has a slight edge, according to their review, with 99.9% malware protection rate, over 99.5% shown by Kaspersky. A marginal difference.

➡️  Customer support McAfee vs Avast

McAfee -  their website has a Virtual Assistant, community forum, and a comprehensive FAQ section that even includes Youtube videos.
Contacting their customer support agents is pretty regular too; live chat is available 24/7.

Avast also has an FAQ troubleshooting section and a community forum.
If you prefer to talk to a customer support agent, you can call Avast's toll-free number that operates 24/7.
One small gripe, if you’re using the free version, Avast won’t help you over the phone…

In comparison, McAfee's support agents will assist you even while you're using the 30-day trial version.
