Among current core issues in ethics is the question: are there universal ethics? Subjectivism and relativism are massively popular: there is no right or wrong, who are we to judge, it's wrong to be judgmental.

I hold something very different: that there are universal ethics - reality based ethics. What do I mean by reality based ethics? One turns to reality, to see what people need to flourish. To flourish emotionally and intellectually, for instance, one needs safety to explore and express, one needs intellectual freedom to disagree as well as to agree. One needs to be able to ask questions and investigate.

One doesn't hold a position because one is told it, because one follows an expert or a religon. One holds a position because research backs that position. So one doesn't hold that women and men are equal as a matter of opinion but because the evidence backs that we have very similar intellectual, emotional and spiritual capacities and needs. We can also show we needs similar things to flourish.

At other times the existence of universal ethics was something taken for granted. Now we are, in the West, in a huge time of flux, so we need to address this, one of the absolute core issues in ethics, relating to right and wrong, good and evil, ethics and religion, religion and morality - relating to freedom of expression - relating to what is core in Western civilization, what we often take for granted but do not act to protect.
