What is a Major scale? Minor? Chromatic? Dominant Phrygian? Chewbacca? And why is it important? In this video I'll explain all of it.

This is the first out of 4 short videos in a series about basic musical concepts explained "right to the point" that I'll use from now on as a reference whenever I need them (i.e. in the middle of the analysis of a soundtrack or a symphony).

This series of videos has been chosen by the members of the Council of Elders. In one of our monthly live meetings we discussed which topics might be the most interesting to make short videos about. Out of the brainstorming, I have chosen scales, intervals, chords and tonalities because I think they can be explained in a natural progression from first to last.

If you want to help me continue creating videos that make you understand music in a different way, you can contribute with different levels of commitment, each with distinct advantages. All this here:

All music in the background by Piglet Spacey!, more exactly from his Trino  album. Check it out on Bandcamp:

Note: Although I think it is clear enough, there are times when I say "the blues scale has 6 notes" and the screen highlights 7. That's because the first and last are the same!!. As all 12 notes are repeated circularly upward and downward, when you play a scale up its a convention that when you reach the end you usually play the first note of the next scale before going down. Like when you do C-D-E-F-G-A-B...C...B-A-G-F-E-D-C". The C in the middle is a higher C, but a C nonetheless.
