The 76th annual Cannes Film Festival is taking place from 16 to 27 May 2023 in Cannes, France. Every year the film festival witnesses the gathering of prominent celebrities from the global entertainment industry on its renowned red carpet. A woman dressed in the colours of the Ukraine flag was removed from the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on 21st May 2023 after she poured fake blood over herself in an apparent anti-war protest.

The incident took place before the premiere of the film Acide by French film director Just Philippot. It was not immediately clear why the demonstration took place at that screening. The protester, wearing a dress of the Ukrainian flag colours - a yellow and blue dress and blue-heeled shoes,  pulled out two capsules of the red substance from her dress and then  released them over her head as she smiled for the cameras.

The fake blood pooled onto the steps of the red carpet beneath her. The woman was then escorted down the stairs by a security guard and away from the event. Before this demonstration, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had compared the Russian invaders' violent destruction of parts of his country to the devastation seen in Hiroshima, Japan. There is also a ban on Russian delegations or film companies connected to the Russian government at this year’s festival, after being implemented last year.

At last year’s film festival in Cannes, a Ukrainian woman staged a protest on the red carpet against the Russian forces by stripping naked and revealing the message “stop raping us” written in body paint across her chest, against a blue and yellow flag, Ukrainian flag colours.

Initially, only actors and actresses attended these big festivals but these days, even influencers on social media are being invited. For example, the CEO of the company BoAT and his wife were seen this year. Check out the video for more!
