Dutch Schultz, AKA Arthur Simon Flegenheimer, was a New York city gangster who stood up to some of the most powerful of the cities mobsters. He is rumored to have ordered the hit on Arnold Rothstein. In retaliation for the assassination of his partner Joey Noe.
This episode focuses on The Dutchman's downfall. It came when he defied the Commission and tried to kill crusading prosecutor Thomas Dewey. Albert Anastasia was ordered to arrange Schultz's elimination, and he selected Louis Buchalter's Murder Inc. to carry out the hit. On 10/23/35 Schultz and three others were gunned down at the Palace Chophouse in Newark NJ.
The Lawless Years was an NBC program that ran for three seasons from 1959-61. It starred James Gregory as real life NYC detective Barney Ruditsky. Mr. Gregory appeared in a number of movies and tv shows and is best known as Inspector Lugar on Barney Miller.
