One Hour of Titanic's Engines | SS Jeremiah O'Brien

One hour loop of an engine room sequence from James Cameron's "Titanic" (1997). This is the part where the engines of the RMS Titanic have been reversed, following the "Full Astern" order from the bridge on the command of First Officer William Murdoch after the iceberg had been sighted. In fact, the order was for the engines the stop, but the "full astern" legend possibly started with the conflation of two different parts of the timeline of events from the sighting of the iceberg to the Titanic coming to her final stop that night, and it has persisted thanks to the numerous iterations of the Titanic saga in various media over the last 100+ years.

For some Titanic aficionados, in whose opinion the film sequence was too short, this represents, at least in some way, how her mighty engines would have operated continuously throughout the voyage in the eyes of her engineering staff. Indeed, watching these Goliath's run, and the rhythmic sounds they produced, would have been a sight to behold.

The engine room seen here is actually that of the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, one of only two WWII-era Liberty Ships still in operation. The O'Brien uses triple-expansion reciprocating steam engines, which were the same type of engines used aboard the Titanic, except for the fact that they are one-third the size of the Titanic's engines. For the film, model makers installed miniature catwalks, lights, and other features to make the O'Brien's engines achieve the scale of the Titanic's four-story engines, and the digitally-added engine room staff helped to emphasize this scale. Also, in point of fact, the O'Brien's engines are in forward motion here, as evidenced in the videos provided below.
