How to Calculate Percentages of Total in Excel

In this video, I'm going to show you how to calculate the percentage of total in Excel. It is a common task when you have a total in a single cell at the end of a table. Here is a quick method to calculate the percentage based on that cell. First, type an equal sign. Then, select the first cell in a range. Add a division sign. Select the total.

We use a relative cell position for the first one. But we want the total number to be always the same cell. Press the F4 key to fix the cell position and create an absolute reference. When you see a $ sign, everything will be right. Press Enter and apply the formula for the entire range.

Using the latest Excel version, you can apply the PERCENTOF function to simplify the task. Type the PERCENTOF function and add the first argument, the data subset. Type a comma and add the second argument, the entire range. Don't forget to press the F4 key twice to create an absolute reference. Press Enter and copy the formula down.
