How to create perfect corners
If you are just now learning how to tile a shower, we show you how to tile from Step 1: create perfectly straight, plumb, true shower walls with perfect 90-degree corners by wet shimming Schulter Kerdi panel boards. These are foam Kerdi boards, named for the Kerdi Membrane built into these wall panels, suitable for tiling your shower surround.
Wet shimming cement board
This wet shimming method can be used on wet shimming Hardibacker board. Wet shimming is used in building shower walls, by applying thin set mortar to studs before you install wall panels, for perfect tiled shower walls.
You could try wet shimming drywall, but don't tile over drywall shower walls; it is against building codes. Some installers use bathroom wall panels drywall with Schluter Kerdi membrane cemented to them, but this is likely a code violation too.
Wet shimming cement boards is good, they might be stiffer than Schluter Kerdi panels. This works with wet shimming Wedi boards in your DIY shower wall tile installation project.

This is how to make straight walls and do it yourself. Here we simply butter up the front of the studs with thin set mortar, then install the Schluter Kerdi shower wall panels onto the studs.
Next, you mash and push down on the Schluter shower wall panels, finessing each of these Kerdi panels until it is level plum and true. we do this by temporarily driving in the Kerdi screws to just hold the wall panel boards in place until the mortar dries overnight. Once the mortar is dry, then we can tighten down the Kerdi fasteners with their washers all the way.
How to create corners
For the perfect 90-degree corners, you use a carpenter's square and manipulate Schluter shower system panels into the thinset mortar which you deposit on the front of the studs until you have perfect corners in your shower system. This is so crucial in building shower walls.

For our waterproof shower systems, we prefer the Kerdi shower wall panels over cementing down the Kerdi Membrane on cement backer boards, it is less work for your shower wall installation. We first apply thinset mortar to the front of the wall studs to provide a cushion, then we embed the Kerdi boards into the thin set mortar.
Next, we manipulate the shower wall panels as they are mushed down in the mortar, using the 6-foot level to make sure they are perfectly vertical (plumb), not curved, and we check up and down, side to side, and diagonally so that each shower wall panel is in a perfectly vertical plane. That's all there is to the wet shim process.
