Her trek from Queenston to Beaver Dams involved navigating treacherous terrain and eluding enemy patrols. Exhausted and injured, Secord finally reached Lieutenant James FitzGibbon, enabling the British to prepare and ultimately repel the American attack at the Battle of Beaver Dams. Simultaneously, the war raged on various fronts, including a significant event in Washington, D.C., in August 1814. British forces, under Major General Robert Ross, launched an attack on the American capital. Following a decisive victory at the Battle of Bladensburg, the British marched into Washington unopposed. In an act of retribution for the American burning of York (modern-day Toronto), they set fire to numerous public buildings, including the White House and the Capitol. The fires left the city in ruins, and the sight of the charred White House became a symbol of American vulnerability. This event not only showcased British military prowess but also profoundly impacted American national pride and resilience.
