Populists have just had their best set of elections to the European Parliament in history. From France's National Rally led by Marine Le Pen to the Netherlands' Party for Freedom led by Geert Wilders, Italy's Brothers of Italy led by Giorgia Meloni, Sweden Democrats, Austria's Freedom Party, and Germany's Alternative for Germany, national populist parties are outperforming older, mainstream parties.

What's driving this surge? Distrust in mainstream political parties and institutions, fears over national community destruction, relative deprivation, and the breakdown of traditional party-voter bonds.

We need to address these legitimate grievances to understand why national populism is rising.
