Does Radiant Barrier Damage Shingles?

A common question that we get at AtticFoil.com is whether a radiant barrier will damage the roof or shingles. The short answer is "No." The Department Of Energy has done testing and concluded that shingles temperature increase between 2º-10º degrees with the use of a radiant barrier. We decided to put it to the test on a hot summer day in Texas. Considering that the shingles were in the 170º temperature range, we had an increase of about 6-7º over the radiant barrier foil insulation. This small increase in temperature should have a minimal to no effect on shingle life considering that typical roofing materials are designed to handle constant temperatures close to 200 degrees.
