The color of urine is subject to constant change. Most of the time its variations of yellow. But sometimes, it may look red, purple, brown or even green. The most important color is red as it may indicate hematuria. Hematuria is, when blood is in the urine. This may be microscopic, or even macroscopic, visible to the naked eye. In this UroChannel video, the color of urine is explained by dr. med. dr. phil. Stefan Buntrock, urologist from Göttingen. Hematuria has to be evaluated as it may be caused by serious diseases such as bladder cancer, prostate cancer, kidney cancer or even kidney disease such as polycystic kidney disease. Sometimes, certain foods have an influence on the color. Beetroot is known for a reddish color of the urine. Certain medication like Amitriptyline may give urine a green color. But also vitamines have an influence, as well as liver or gallbladder disease.
