Wangari Maathai (01.04.1940 - 25.09.2011) war eine kenianische Biologin und Umweltaktivistin. 1977 rief sie das Aufforstungsprojekt "Green Belt Movement" ins Leben, das mittlerweile in 13 Ländern in Afrika aktiv ist und über 45 Millionen Bäume neu gepflanzt hat. Wangari wurde zur zentralen Identifikationsfigur der Frauenbewegung in Kenia und war ab 2002 stellvertretende Ministerin für Umweltschutz. Sie engagierte sich für Klimagerechtigkeit und schaffte als erste grüne Politikerin Afrikas den Sprung in eine Regierung. 2004 erhielt sie den Friedensnobelpreis für ihren Einsatz für nachhaltige Entwicklung, Frieden und Demokratie.

In 1977 she launched the “Green Belt Movement” reforestation project, which is now active in 13 countries in Africa and has replanted over 45 million trees. Wangari became the central figurehead of the women's movement in Kenya and was deputy minister for environmental protection from 2002. She was committed to climate justice and was the first green politician in Africa to become a member of a government. In 2004 she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work on sustainable development, peace and democracy.
