Potash is very important, major nutrient element and required in high quantity and even more than nitrogen in several crops. In this video, we have highlighted its Deficiency Symptoms in the field crops. In most cases its pronounced visible symptoms are not seen and a hidden hunger leading to lesser yield is attributed to potash Deficiency. Curling of maize, wheat and sugarcane crops leaves is seen in case of lesser deficiency but in severe cases scorching of leaf margins of the lower leaves is observed in most cereal crops. Late maturity, development of fleshy peeled oranges having lesser amount of juice is also attributed to its deficiency. Reduction of internodal distance in sugarcane and poor cementing or lignification of the stem tissues of the cereal crops leading to lodging tendency is also considered as the typical symptom of potash deficiency.
Such circumstances are developing in the world that may lead to a crisis of fertilizers throughout the globe. Especially developing countries are expected to become victim of this crisis. There are several reasons behind this issue. Firstly, we know that Russia is the top exporter of fertilizers globally due to its reserves of natural gas as this fossil fuel is necessary for processing of fertilizers. Due to conflict between Russia and Ukraine, America and Europe have imposed severe sanctions on Russia to stop its invasion of neighboring country. This has halted the exports of Russia because now Russia is out of SWIFT payment system that is used for payments worldwide. Second major reason is the uncertainty of global food security. China is the second largest exporter of fertilizers in the world. China has announced not to export fertilizers any more due to the risks of food shortage for their public in the near future. So, they have decided to meet the needs of its own people.
