The “New Taipei City Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival” is recommended by National Geographic Magazine as “one of the world’s most recommendable winter tour destination” and Reader’s Digest, listed Pingxi as “ one of the 40 destination sites one shall visit before 40 years old.”

Background of Sky Lantern
Sky, according to folk customs, is the location of Sky Palace where the supreme sovereign of all gods - the Jade Emperor (Heavenly Grandfather), and the rest of the deities that protect all people on earth reside. In the past, people worshiped the sky for blessing. For Han people, the sky represents the mighty god that protects every life on earth.
Sky lanterns are also known as Kong Ming lanterns. Allegedly, it was invented by Zhuge Liang in the era of Three Kingdoms when he was trapped by Xima Yi during the battle of Pingyang City. He invented this kind of large lanterns that are capable of floating high up in the sky using heated air as its power source, successfully making contact with the outside world for military communication purpose. Later, the sky lantern was used by people to pray for blessings from the Gods in the sky. By flying a sky lantern on the Lantern Festival, you can “send a message directly to the Gods of Heaven”, and pray for their blessings.
The origin of sky lantern flying in Pingxi can be traced back to the years of Daoguang. At that time, thefts and robberies in Pingxi were a serious problem, and the settlers had to retreat to the mountains. After the threat was dealt with, setters who chose to stayed in the village flied a sky lantern as a signal of safety to inform their families to return home. This afterwards became a local custom. Villagers often write down their wishes and prayers to the deities on sky lanterns and flied them on January 15th of the Lunar Calendar, the Lantern Festival, for harmony and luck. Therefore, sky lanterns are also referred to as “blessing lanterns” or “harmony lanterns”.
Surrounded by mountains, Pingxi in New Taipei City has the advantageous geographic location. With the average of humidity up to 75-80%, its rainy and humid weather makes it the only place certified by the government that is safe to fly sky lanterns. Thanks to the unique weather in Pingxi, we are able to preserve and pass down this traditional culture in different manners.
