A ball screw (or ballscrew) is a mechanical linear actuator that translates rotational motion to linear motion with little friction. A threaded shaft provides a helical raceway for ball bearings which act as a precision screw. As well as being able to apply or withstand high thrust loads, they can do so with minimum internal friction. They are made to close tolerances and are therefore suitable for use in situations in which high precision is necessary. The ball assembly acts as the nut while the threaded shaft is the screw. In contrast to conventional leadscrews, ballscrews tend to be rather bulky, due to the need to have a mechanism to recirculate the balls.

Steering - It consists of a worm at end of steering rod and a nut which is mounted on worm with two set of balls in grooves of worm, in between nut and worm. function of ball is to reduce friction between worm and nut. nut has number of teeth on outside which mesh with teeth of worm wheel sector. drop arm is mounted on sector. which transfer motion to steering arms through linkages. when steering wheel turn, balls in worm groove rolls, causes to nut slides on worm. this linear motion of nut causes worm sector turn at an angle and actuate link rod through drop arm, resulting in desire steering of wheels. the end play of worm can be adjusted with help of adjuster nut. a screw is also provided by means of drop arm and hence wheel sector positioned along its axis.
