Economics Major – a. Economics is the largest major at Columbia University with six different paths at Columbia b. Pure Economics – introduction to micro, introduction to macro, intro to econometrics, electives and seminars c. Economics and Statistics plus Economics and Math – useful for grad school and get a PhD. Academic research is quantitative d. Economics and Philosophy e. Economics and Political Science – for public policy and government majors f. Financial Economics – substitute for an Accounting and Finance Degree for banking, investment banking and wall street g. Concentration in Economics is like a minor h. Common core plus five electives and a seminar 2. Public Policy / Development a. Economic Development was of interest to him b. Economics and Political Science didn’t work out for him c. South Asian Area Studies complements Economics for the human element d. Long term goal is to work in Development in India e. Internship at Pratham, the largest educational NGO in India, where he worked on Pratham Alumni association for vocational skills f. Summer at Ernst and Young in Delhi on public private partnership in the social sector to understand how a consulting firm can help g. He got interested in public health h. Doing a research in public health under a professor who is also a historian, to complement economics, development and area studies under one umbrella 3. Area Studies a. Middle Eastern and South Asian studies. MESAS b. Latin American and South Asian studies, Slavic, East Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, African studies c. Different from French, Germanic and Hispanic studies d. Language is not the anchor. The theory of studying these regions is the anchor e. Post colonialization is the common core f. Includes geography, literature, language, culture, art, and cinema. It is a humanities subject that combines political science, history, art history and literature all in one g. Class sizes are small in Area Studies can be as small as 6-50 people, Economics classes are minimum 50-100 people 4. Common App Columbia University Form a. The common application form has several questions asking for books, films, cultural performances, newspapers read etc. b. Columbia is proud of its tradition which has to do with books c. The core curriculum has two pillars literature humanities and contemporary civilisation. They have to do with great literature and great philosophy in the western civilisation d. Both of these core classes are reading intensive e. Reading about 100-150 pages a week like a typical humanities class f.
