जगदीश सेठी Jadish Sethi (15 January 1903 - 12 June 1969) was a famous character actor of the Indian Cinema. He was also a famous director and writer of many Hindi films.
Jadish Sethi was born on 15 January 1903 in Pind Dandan Khan, Punjab, undivided India, now in Jhelum district Punjab, Pakistan. After completed his matriculation in the year 1920 and went to Lahore for gradation. In the year 1928, he joined Punjab Film Company as an assistant cameraman. Later he joined New Theaters in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He left Calcutta and came to Bombay (now Mumbai) and worked in 1931 film "Alam Ara" as Jagdish.
In 1933, he again joined New Theaters and worked in many movies. In all he has worked in 85 movies during his career.
Jadish Sethi has acted in famous movies such as the first Indian sound movie Alam Ara (1931), Do Dil (1955), Sardar (1955), and Kiklee (1960). He had a brother Sudershan Sethi, who was also an actor who has worked in movies Gandhi (1982), Jewel Thief (1967) and Bullet (1976). Jagdish is also believed to be an astrologer.
Jadish Sethi lived in the famous Punjabi Gali, Bombay, where all famous actors, director, writers, producer of that era lived. He was married and had a son named Omesh. He was Deck Master Mariner in the Indian Merchant Navy, his son died of cardiac arrest in 1993 barely at the age of fifty at the time of death. Jagdish Sethi had a brother Sudarshan Sethi, who was also actor and worked in many films like Jwell Thief (1967), Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), Bullet (1976), Gandhi (1982) and many more. Jagdish Sethi was fond of racing & tennis. He has written a book "Hichkiyan", short stories on Bollywood.
Jadish Sethi has directed five movies Do Dil (1947), Raat Ki Rani (1948), Insan (1952), Jaggu (1952), Pensioner (1954).
Jadish Sethi has worked as an Actor in almost 85 movies; some of his famous works are Alam Ara (1931), Sher-e-Arab (1930), President (1937), Kanhan Hai Manzil Teri (1939).
Jadish Sethi has also worked as screenwriter, story writer and produced a movie |Raat Ki Rani" (1948), which was a great critical success at that time. He was also a famous lyricist and his songs "Pyaar Ki Raah Dikha Duniya Ko...", "Pyaari Surato Moh Bhari Murto..., Sitam the hazaar sukr ke..." are still famous among aged people.
At the age of 63 Jadish Sethi died on 12th June 1969 in Mumbai at his house due to old age illness.
